Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

The migration to DVB-T does however make it easier for them to rollout subscription channels (i.e. porn), since the decryption process is much simpler to implement, being based on a trivial manipulation of the digital bitstream. So perhaps the simple explanation for the migration to digital TV is t...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

However, as the angle of incidence for the radio wave is increased, the wave enters the ionosphere at an ever more oblique angle, and the Maximum Usable Frequency goes up and up! Right up to 10GHz (thats 10 GIGA Hertz) and beyond! Oh, really? Any technical data? Breit & Tuve 1926? Appleton 1932...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

So as RF is saying, grazing angles, like q = 89.9 degrees makes 1/ cos(q) go to large coefficients making GHz reflections possible. You then get higher electron density on the equator. But it is short-sighted of you to dismiss the possibility, no? Suppose the reflection of 10 GHz is possible if you...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

You really helped make your point. Higher bandwidth signals (2-10 Ghz) are able to be bounced locally. I never argued Africa. Thanks for your insights as always. Excactly, whatsgoingon, locally . At 300 km or less. The range of "2-10 GHz" in not used for satellite TV. Ku band for Europe is...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

But what you have left out all along is that GHz can be propagated in the local area by tropospheric scattering. This is an old military technology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropospheric_scatter Seems 2-10 GHz is easy enough to use in this way, no? Not at all. Do you ever read sources you are r...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

if an image depicts a rocket and I see no evidently absurd details there (like photographers near the jet engine at the launch), I suppose it is an image of a real rocket (not photoshopped image, not a dream, not a hallucination) until somebody proves the contrary. It is based on such experience: 1...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

Is the theory of ionospheric refraction of radiowaves correct, though? Of course, yes! Ionospheric refraction cannot be disputed. What would make it easier for the layman to understand this concept? Bear in mind, I am a layman myself. But maybe that is to advantage. Which aspects are difficult to g...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

I'm certainly no expert in the matter, but I would tend to lean toward the non-existence of satellites myself just from a strict business sense. Understanding that many satellites supposedly have redundant partners that theoretically could take over in event of failure, it would just seem too risky...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

Re the ionosphere I believe in quoting properly. It seems easier to put geostationary TV broadcasting satellites above the equator, above the ionosphere, than to build TV broadcasting stations in Sahara, Madagascar or in the middle of the Pacific. The actual site of the skywave transmitt...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

Does anyone know why in the google maps there is no real satellite pictures of the oceans. Instead we can see this: http://www.myalbum.co.uk/index.php?m=fto&a=73&id=298755485&key=D3UD3YFT It's clearly blue plaster. Isn't it a picture of sea bottom? Near continents, their continuations s...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings

What exactly is your point? Are you saying that the French are better at faking pictures than the Russians? My point is French (and, in general, Occidental) companies are supposed to have more finances, better equipment and better staff than Russian ones. In general, Occidental people consider Russ...

To catch my joke you have to watch the videos.
whatsgoingon,

How about the mu coefficient? Are you too busy analysing all that media content?
