Korean Translation (working file)

Unread post by hoi.polloi »

Hi everyone, please excuse my use of the forum as an office space, but all my computers are having difficulty working with English and Korean text together.

So this file is just a way for me to compile the various options of translating lines of 'September Clues' into Korean. Korean is a difficult language, and also simple (even too simple) in other ways -- and since I'm no good at it no matter what about it is simple or hard, I also have had problems storing the data. Is my file being sabotaged or is it simply a case of my unexpected use of programs ill designed to handle the text? So I figure: why not, in the order of transparency and giving easier access to translators, post the transcript right here - for everyone? There's nothing secret about it, and on the contrary, the more attention on 'September Clues' in this day and age, all the better for it.

So without further ado, here is my best attempts so far (please forgive the numerous problematic language - Koreans tell me this is an abysmal translation so far) ...

BBC: “Now, within an hour, the twin towers had collapsed. Re: Korean Translation (working file)

Unread post by hoi.polloi »

So these are my initial translations through translation software, but the software is flawed and I have to go back in where there are obvious problems.

Also, some names like "Jim" can be translated to Korean Hangul easily, whereas others could be transliterated. My question to Simon would be: what do you prefer? Should the names all be transliterated, like Winston to 윈스턴은, or should it be left Western characters? Also, Winston might be better as 윈스턴 "Weensa-tuhn" rather than "Weensa-tuhn-N" for instance. And I will do my best of course to find help from actual Korean experts but just wanting some direction from you, the Director of 'September Clues'!

Most all Koreans can read and understand names with Western characters, by the way, if you just wanted to leave them all in English.

Re: Korean Translation (working file)

Unread post by hoi.polloi »

Please everyone feel free to post questions about this script, since I need all the help I can get. (I am considering just paying for a translation service.)

Some things I know I can improve on are: zoom out, which translated very poorly and cumbersomely as "camera zoom lens slowly shrinks the image" or something like that. But perhaps it can just read "camera zoom lens image shrink rapidly" -- there are a lot of weird things like that in this translation because as far as I understand Korean, like Chinese - or any language I suppose - depends crucially on context and I have no idea how to retain a good consistent context throughout. So this is a work in progress.

Wow, what a brave endeavour, Hoi! Regarding the names I would think leaving them in Western characters is fine - I've seen that being done in other Chinese & Japanese translations, but I have no idea if that also works for Koreans. I prefer to leave that decision to you - or your Korean friends / helpers.

These Korean characters are quite beautiful and graphically fascinating! :)
Keep up the great effort - take all the time you need of course, no need to rush it !

The Korean characters are relatively new - designed by an empire. It is meant to be a logical alphabet/syllabary that is also modular. So with a simple chart one can even manage to pronounce it crudely one's own Western waygook way.

There are subtleties like the O character actually being pronounced "ng" when it is at the end of a cluster of characters, and the first O-YO vowels I would describe as more like EUH and YEUH, and the OW is definitely more like OOO, among other problems with this kind of chart, but it's easy to learn, so I can definitely help confirm the transliteration. I am getting help with the grammar and real Korean.

I have some good news. I have been reviewing some of this Korean and a lot of it translates pretty simply and okay according to Koreans, even if it's clear it's a translation and not a native one. I have been warned that there are some words that are a little difficult and not everyone will be able to read them, but it is the same with English that some technical terms are simply beyond the average person's understanding, such as 'digital mask' and so forth. So I shouldn't worry about it. However, it bodes well that some of the oddities of the news and some of Simon's puns (which incidentally are the hardest things to translate) even carry over pretty well. For instance, the Korean word for missile is about the same as the English word (I believe it's taken from English) so the "mi-" slip ups translate well. And if I can split up Simon's split-up sentences in a way that makes sense with the timing of September Clues, and do other tricky things a real translator should be doing instead of me, it could be partially culturally accessible if not merely making sense.

So anyway, just wanted to let you know it is making some headway and I don't think it will forever be just a useless post on the forum.

Thumbs up for your great efforts dear Hoi Polloi. I can read Korean too (well, I learned how to ) but I can't speak it nor interpret it properly. The Korean symbols are definitely a lot easier to understand than the Chinese / Japanese "漢字" characters.
I also started some of the Japanese translation, although quite slowly, I must admit. It might definitely take some time ...

Update:

From a better native speaker who has translated things before, I am politely told this translation is far from ideal. Not exactly rubbish but a little too far removed from real Korean. So we are very slowly working on a re-translation with easier to understand Hangul. Sorry the update will be slow in coming. Thanks for your patience.

Okay, an example of the revised text:

September Clues Part A 9/11-거짓에 가려진 진실 (part A)

This research is dedicated to all the innocents killed on - and as a consequence of - 9/11.
이 조사를 9/11 테러로 인해 돌아가신 모든 무고한 사람들에게 바칩니다

When criminals have unlimited access to instruments of mass persuasion
범죄자들이 대중을 설득할 수 있는 수단에 아무런 제한 없이 관여할 수 있을 때는,

Solid proof of their crimes are hard to expose.
누가 봐도 확실한 증거조차 공개되기 어려울 때가 있다.

...

Much better. More "natural" and readable, according to Koreans. We should have a Korean translation file prepared soon.

Regrettably, this old version of September Clues we just now got around to translating seems behind the times, but it's still a great tool for waking people up, I guess. So it's a little something to be happy about.

Good news coming soon regarding certain progress on a certain language iteration of September Clues.

Hint
The video description should read something like this:
