Ten schools are locked down, major roadways are closed, and residents have been told to stay indoors as South Carolina police search for a gunman who shot at cops this morning.

The man allegedly opened fire around 10 a.m. this morning as Greenville County police tried to pull him over for improperly displaying a license plate on his silver Yukon SUV. He began shooting at the officers as he pulled over, and then ran into a nearby apartment complex.

Police are now searching the area to try and locate the gunman.

No one was injured in the gunfire, police said.

Nice sepia tone (from 0:28)

Re Police Chief's reference to "Reverse nine one one" —
Per Wiki:
Reverse 911 is a public safety communications system developed by Cassidian Communications, formerly PlantCML, a unit of EADS North America.[1][2] It is used by public safety organizations in Canada and the United States to communicate with groups of people in a defined geographic area. The system uses a database of telephone numbers and associated addresses, which, when tied into geographic information systems (GIS), can be used to deliver recorded emergency notifications to a selected set of telephone service subscribers.[3] The term is a registered trademark in the United States.

Case studies

The system is used to notify residents in emergency situations. During the 2010 Boston water emergency, government agencies used the system to notify a large number of Boston-area residents in particular neighborhoods to boil water before drinking.[4] During the much more contained 2004 bulldozer rampage in Granby, Colorado, authorities used Reverse 911 to notify the approximately 1,500 residents of the town to evacuate from the bulldozer's path.[5] During the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Seaside and Astoria, Oregon, residents were notified by Reverse 911 and sirens to evacuate low-lying areas.[6] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_911

If I hear the word "gunman" one more time in a major "news" story, I... ;)

It seems that the scriptwriters aren't tiring of this meme any time soon. It's the cliché that "works", unfortunately...

Well, he's supposedly been arrested now (no new pic on this one). The story sounds fishy — fakey video and 'shooter' with 3 names. Cover story for their "Reverse 911" lockdown test? <_<

Suspect That Prompted South Carolina Schools Lockdown Arrested
Published October 28, 2011 | Associated Press
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Authorities have arrested a gunman who they say prompted a massive manhunt and the lock down of 10 schools after he shot at a police officer.

Investigators say 25-year-old Patrick Dean Lowrance was arrested Friday night at a Greenville apartment. They say he gave up peacefully and was taken to the hospital to treat a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

Authorities say Lowrance drove off in a stolen SUV after a Greenville police tried to pull him over Friday morning. He was later found at an apartment complex and fired shots at an officer before disappearing into the woods. [...]
Last sentence:
Investigators have reached out to Lowrance's family for help finding him, but police said they haven't provided much assistance.[If he's in custody, wtf  — typo or screw up?]

Google "Patrick Dean Lowrance" & get page after page of this story! <_< A Greenville news site has a gallery of pics showing the police out doing their 'thing': scaring..erm, 'protecting' the community:

Wow, the Media is amazing — they have mugshots of this "gunman", but despite his supposedly long record with 10 charges against him (including attempted murder), Greenville County Jail doesn't have a photo "available"! :P

and he's only one foot high and weighs 100 lbs! :o

Are these previous 'mug-shots' of him, for previous offences he had been arrested for or is this/are these ones of someone who has been shot in the shoulder?

Edit: The three name thing is apparently commonly used so that someone else is not brought in who has the same first and last names of the 'perp' hence Lee Harvey Oswald, John Wilkes Booth, Sirhan Sirhan Sirhan.

OK, the last one is a joke which I'd tried before and...er...nobody laughed then! :(

They laughed when I said I was going to become a comedian...they're not laughing now!

Maybe, but it's strange that his haircut and beard length is exactly the same in both shots, and with a different T shirt. Do you have a link?

Still doesn't make sense that the detention facility that's supposedly holding him wouldn't have any mugshot available on their inmate webform, which has all his charges listed (but no height or weight!) yet the Media has his picture? <_<

Edit: Oh good, thanks HN! I had checked the Spartanburg County one before, but was looking in recent arrests. :D

Lightened to compare:

UPDATE: Still no mugshot photo or correct height / weight added to the Greenville County inmate form for 'Patrick Dean Lowrance', but charges have now increased to 15 — including 6 counts of 'Attempted Murder' and 3 'Kidnapping' <_<

They finally added Lowrance's mug, but no correct height/weight yet:

This is interesting in that, although this may be a real criminal, it highlights the media's hyper-spin of every opportunity, the overblown drama of police 'authorities' to justify their actions and typical bureaucratic incompetence as a comparison.

But why is the video footage of police supposedly searching the woods so obviously manipulated and 'browned out'? Still something very fishy about all this, just can't put my finger on it yet. <_<

Same thing happened in Germany just a few days ago.

Almost the exact same scenario...

Edit:
Real or not, I guess everyone here can make out the consequences of this. How long will it that you will have to put your hands up, get out of the car, lay on the ground and they will tie you while they are checking your driver license and your car AT EVERY TRAFFIC CONTROL.

Latest installment:
New video on the local news site shows Lowrance supposedly "in court" but behind a white metal cage mesh. He only blinks & moves his head slightly — lots of clumsy edits but no shot showing any location reference or anything of a "court room" at all. Weirder still, the article claims he spoke to the judge, but there's no clip in the video of that either, only quotes in the text.

Image
@ http://www2.wspa.com/news/2011/oct/28/8 ... r-2620697/

And, on his Greenville Detention Center inmate info page (still no real height/weight), it now states his location as "Housing Unit: ISO07" with a text link: "Building One" http://www.greenvillecounty.org/Detenti ... _Hours.pdf
which is a dud = "404 error: File not found"

Another video spins the 'fear factor' (& 'trial by media') with an 'interview' of the supposed victims of Lowrance's 'armed robbery', but only audio with anonymous hands because they didn't want their faces shown on TV <_<

This is gettin' fishier

Edit: I thought they'd taken the video off, but it seems to be back (or comes & goes) — looks like if it doesn't load properly it defaults to a photo still
i.e. Alternates with this image:
Image
@ http://www2.wspa.com/news/2011/oct/28/8 ... r-2620697/

While I had it cached on an open tab (Flash: couldn't save it) I grabbed some more shots anyway:

The "judge" — only a few seconds, not speaking, but audio of supposed judge played over clips of 'caged' Lowrance — note the familiar masonry:
Image

People supposedly moving out of the "court" (note 'camera' on left):

Strange vertical shadow down woman's face — filmed through glass?

But the shadow seems to 'move' with her:
