If the forum's image forensic practitioners have a spare minute, expert opinion on this photo would be much appreciated B)

What kind of camera is that Nikon? Does it normally wash out reds so bizarrely?

It looks to me like it could either be real with editing or some default camera effects, or else fabricated.

The Red Betty photo was apparently taken with a Nikon D3S, a professional DSLR. The camera was launched 14 Oct 2009 and boasts a 36 x 23.9 mm CMOS image sensor with high light sensitivity.

From http://www.dpreview.com/news/2009/10/14/nikonD3s :

Nikon D3S professional DSLR - as used by NASA on the International Space Station!

We are told that NASA has selected the Nikon D3S "for use in the Space Shuttle and to photograph activities at the International Space Station (ISS)" ;)

From http://www.nikon.com/news/2009/1221_NASA-D3S_01.htm :
Nikon Corporation Press Release wrote:
NASA Orders D3S Digital SLR Cameras and Interchangeable Lenses from Nikon
December 21, 2009

Nikon Corporation (Michio Kariya, President) is pleased to announce that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has placed an order for eleven D3S digital SLR cameras and seven AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lenses to be used for photographic documentation.

No special modifications will be made to these products. They will be the same products available to end-users, confirming the incredible versatility of the D3S. This equipment will be used along with the Nikon D2XS digital SLR cameras, NIKKOR lenses, and Nikon Speedlights already in use at the International Space Station.

Nikon has spent many years contributing to NASA's study of space through the development and manufacture of advanced and extremely durable cameras as well as of NIKKOR lenses that make the most of Nikon's optical technologies, and of which production has recently reached fifty million units.

To date, NASA has captured more than 700,000 images using Nikon equipment carried into space. Space, however, is not the only extreme environment in which Nikon equipment is used. Nikon also provides official observation equipment used in exploring the Antarctic.

In addition, already about 15 types of NIKKOR lenses (more than 35 lenses all together) are kept aboard the International Space Station for intravehicular and extravehicular photography to provide continued support for NASA's space activities.
Doubtless, Nikon also provides specialist technical support to NASA, assisting with the Agency's image processing, etcetera. ^_^

Today Nikon is in bed with NASA. In the era of the Apollo Project, it was Hasselblad, the luxury Swedish camera maker.

As for the Red Betty image, the embedded exif metadata is curious.

The apparent aperture setting (f9) the exposure time (1/13s), the speed rating (ISO400) and the focal length (35mm) appear inconsistent with the lighting configuration in the image (no flash, external illumination chiefly from above).

A rudimentary simulation has just been made under similar lighting conditions. In that test, another Nikon DSLR body with a CMOS sensor, a Nikkor 18-55m zoom @ 35mm f/length, f9 aperture and ISO400 were used.

In the simulation, as per the Red Betty image, the camera automatically set the shutter speed. That resulted in shutter speeds of 1/40s at the very lowest. 1/60s and 1/80s were more common.

By contrast, the apparent exposure time of the (well-illuminated) Red Betty image is extraordinarily low at 1/13s for the same camera settings and lighting conditions.
