I looked in the US Directories for a man called "Barak Hussein Obama", and apparently he lives with his three sisters in a shack somewhere near New York. Will one of you "Americans" look him up, pop around to his address and see if he needs welfare or a gofundme page, I have some decent second-hand shoes he might be interested in.

I still don't believe he ever existed.

Interesting news coverage of the earthquake in Taiwan a few days ago. I thought the money shot picture of a semi-collapsing tilting building looked a bit weird. On closer investigation, none of the pictures I saw showed any damage whatsoever other than that one building and the immediate surroundings. Here's a nice big picture:

Image

This ABC news video report even has a subtitle 'Quake Topples Buildings'. That's plural. So where are the other buildings?

http://abcnews.go.com/International/64- ... d=52878060

More quotes from the news report:

'...buidings destroyed...'

'...roads, bridges, cars damaged. Neighbourhoods reduced to rubble...'

'...and tonight in Taiwan, forty thousand households are without water...'

A lot of news stories I found had other photographs of damage and rubble, collapsed buildings etc., with captions referring to the last serious quake there in 2016. The casual reader might assume all the pictures are the new earthquake, but in fact it seems to be a one-building earthquake. I've spent a good half hour wading through google image search looking for even one picture of damage that is a) not that featured building, and b) identified as being from the Feb 6th earthquake. And I have come up with precisely fuck all.

Sphere and Plane: Sighting the Moon to Show the Shape of the Earth

The Experiment

Here is one simple demonstration of how to tell the shape of our earth by comparing a sphere to a plane by sighting the moon.

Say three people were looking at the same moon at the same time. One person is in California, one in Texas and the other person is in New York. Perhaps a fourth person on the other side of the globe would confirm they cannot see the moon at all.

The model below only has two people sighting the moon for demonstration purposes.

Image

If the sphere were flattened out while the North Pole remained facing the North Star, then the 3 people would all be looking in different directions at same moon at the same time, as if there were 3 different moons. Since we know there is only one moon, we must conclude we live on a sphere and not a plane.

Image

Try it with Some Friends

Below you will find a template for a paper sphere.

Directions:
1) Print out two copies of the sphere template.
2) Cut one copy out and tape it into a sphere.
3) Leave the other sphere copy flat. Let's call this the plane.
4) Find three friends who are on different parts of the earth, two who can see the moon and one who cannot because the moon is on the opposite side of the earth. Plot directional arrows for those who can see the moon including yourself on both the sphere and the plane. Just put a black dot for the friend who cannot see the moon at all.
5) View the results on both the sphere and the plane of the 3 arrows for those who can see the moon.
6) The model where all the arrows point in the same direction is the correct model.

Spoiler Alert: What you will find is that on a plane, arrows will be pointed in 3 different directions but on a sphere, all the arrows will be pointed in nearly the same direction. This will demonstrate the general shape of planet earth. Would you like to confirm your results? Choose 3 other friends on different parts of the earth and repeat the experiment.

I'd like to be obsessive by making the language a little crisper. I note that "looking in different directions" is subject to two meanings:
-looking towards two different points
-looking along two different vectors
The observers on a sphere would of course be looking along different vectors, but towards the same point.

You have proven that observers on a flat earth -- when it results from flattening a sphere-- will be looking towards different points. That is, they will not all be looking towards the moon. But I think that says nothing about a flat earth which does NOT result from squashing a sphere. Flat earthers maintain that the earth was always flat. If one can imagine such a thing as a flat earth, observers upon it would be looking towards the same point along different vectors. Just like the observers on a sphere.

Khan, you've attempted to give us quite an elegantly simple proof that the earth is not flat. But it isn't possible to prove a negative: I can prove there's a mouse in my pantry by pointing to droppings & tooth-marks. But if there IS no mouse I can point to no evidence of his nonexistence.

Please forgive the lecture, but evidence and therefore proof can be derived only from that which exists. I agree with you that the earth is a sphere, but I think we must content ourselves with
--proving the earth is a sphere, or
--disproving arguments that it is flat (I have not seen any EVIDENCE that it's flat)

Regards. That was fun.

Penelope,

I don’t think your obsessiveness about language cleared up anything. Why not just try the experiment?
Assume any shape you wish for the earth. In fact try the experiment on a flat earth, a concave earth, a cube earth, a cylinder earth, a sombrero hat shaped earth, whatever shape you desire and see what happens. See how many different places the moon will be sighted. The shape of the earth with only 1 moon in common to all sighters will be the correct shape. Excited to hear about your results. :P

The shape of the earth with only 1 moon in common to all sighters will be the correct shape.

Yes, of course, Kham. But I think that's different than your original argument, which does seem to decide that the outline of any flat earth would have to be derived from a flattened sphere.

At any rate I doubt that any flat earthers have come up with a presentation detailed enough to explain the path of the moon such that it appears at the correct times by all observers. (Or even the shape of their flat earth.)

I understand you to be saying that since the moon is correctly sited by observers on a sphere that the only other potential shape that could work is one derived by flattening that sphere. It is only that assumption that I am taking issue with. But NOT because I allege a different flat earth outline will work. I, like you, give no credence to the flat earth whim. I merely state that your assumption is not a proof.

I am perfectly happy to let stand our disagreement about what constitutes proof.

Oh haha! That would be Mao Ling and Whang In Sik. Which I'm sure he did the next day!

A funny article of special relevance to truthseekers:
https://www.iceagenow.info/seeing-the-light/

The Polywater Discovery

The current photon discovery reminds me of the late 1960’s when a claim of the discovery of “Polywater” made the news circuit then. That novel form of water was not only of obscure interest to some scientists, it was portrayed as a major menace to any life depending on the current forms of water. It was hypothesized that, by just adding a drop of it to 300 km long Lake Ontario might –instantaneously – “polymerize” the entire lake into something of the viscosity of gelato.

The problem then was that no other laboratory could replicate those earth (or water) shattering findings. In the end, the novel substance thought to have been discovered was determined to be nothing more than trace remnants of stop-cock grease. Polywater, as proclaimed then, did not and does not exist; period. It wasn’t a breakthrough-discovery after all.

The article also lists some of the common features of past science frauds/mistakes.
