Just a little Nuclear tidbit today.

In my above post there was an image of the 'RDS-1' test site more commonly known in the West as Joe-1.

The allegedly 22kt 1949 Soviet test was announced by the US president Harry Truman after an 'air sampling scoop' on one of his WB-29's detected the 'radioactive debris' during a flight between Tokyo & Alaska.

Image

You can read the story here...
So far none of the flights in the Northern Pacific had picked up a scent, but after this flight returned to Eilson and a huge Geiger counter checked the filters, the technicians detected radioactive traces. This was the 112th alert of the Atomic Energy Detection System (the previous 111 had been caused by natural occurrences, such as earthquakes). After a complex chain of events, involving more flights to collect more air samples, consultations among U.S. government scientists, consultants, and contractors, including radiological analysis by Tracerlab and Los Alamos Laboratory, and secret consultations with the British government, the U.S. intelligence community concluded that Moscow had indeed conducted a nuclear test. On 23 September 1949, President Truman announced that "We have evidence that within recent weeks an atomic explosion occurred in the U.S.S.R."

Just a bit of a follow up on Simon's eyeball carrying Hiroshima 'witness' Setsuka Thurlow.

Thurlow is Canadian through her late Husband (& 'global visionary') James McKitrick Thurlow.

She has an interesting history...
“As a young member of the church of Reverend Tanimoto, Setsuko served as an interpreter for Dr. Norman Cousins, the editor of the influential Saturday Review. One evening during the programming of May, 2010, Setsuko Thurlow and Shigeko Sasamori and several other hibakusha had dinner at the home of Sally and Bob Silverberg, Norman Cousins’ nephew and Shigeko’s cousin.
Wiki on 'Reverend Tanimoto'
After the war he went on extensive speaking tours of the USA, raising funds for his project of a Hiroshima peace center, and for the Hiroshima Maidens.[1] He appeared on the popular television program This Is Your Life where he and his family were placed in the uncomfortable position of meeting with Captain Robert A. Lewis, copilot of the Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.[2] Due to these public activities he developed an unwanted reputation as a publicity seeker and attracted the attention of the US and Japanese authorities as a potential "anti-nuke trouble-maker"
You can watch the jaw dropping farce here...

As for Norman Cousins check out this section...
During World War II Cousins was a member of the editorial board for the Overseas Bureau of the Office of War Information and was cochairman of the 1943 Victory Book Campaign. He also came to believe that enduring world peace could only be achieved through effective world governance. The use of atomic weapons to end the war further galvanized his thinking and writing. In Saturday Review, Cousins affirmed that “The need for world government was clear before August 6, 1945, but Hiroshima and Nagasaki raise that need to such dimensions that it can no longer be ignored.” His editorial “Modern Man is Obsolete,” exploring the implications of the atomic age was widely quoted and in its expanded book form was briefly on the bestseller list. When the United World Federalists was founded in 1947 Cousins served as one of its vice presidents and later as president. To generate support for world government he made more than 2,000 speeches both in the United States and around the world.
Anyhow here's some more of Thurlow pulling out her 'eyeball carrying' stunt...

I've often wondered what those vertical 'smoke lines' were whenever a 'nook' detonates.
Here is an explanation:
http://nuclearweaponarchive.org/Usa/Tes ... rails.html

Wherein it states:
'...to record the progress of the shock front. Shock pressure gauges can be used, but they are difficult to deploy anywhere but near the ground where interactions between the shock wave and the surface complicate their interpretation.

A solution to this problem was suggested by a serendipitous observation in the very first nuclear test, the Trinity shot on 16 July 1945 (see at left). Berlyn Brixner photographed the cable of barrage balloon (the vertical white line at the left edge of the picture) behind the fireball which was visible due to the smoke from the vaporizing cable
So, they would have us believe that barrage balloons were present when the initial tests were carried out [maybe so but I cannot remember seeing any present in any pictures on this forum, though I may be wrong and simply did not notice any] which led to the 'serendipitous observation' mentioned above, and thereafter employed 'smoke rockets' to allow the same phenomenon to be witnessed.
Now these 'smoke rockets must be incredibly fast and accurately set off in order to outpace the 'nook' once it 'goes off'.
Does anyone else find this mildly ridiculous?

Serendipity is a common device used to drive the scientific narrative. Think of all the "serendipitous observations" that Arthur C Clarke made from his island retreat on Serendip.

There were once three princes from Serendip that also made observations we are told... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three_ ... f_Serendip ... the three princes would inspire Voltaire of course... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zadig ... then apparently, Cuvier, a creator of the art of paleontology, would be inspired enough by Zadig to write this...

"Today, anyone who sees only the print of a cloven hoof might conclude that the animal that had left it behind was a ruminator, and this conclusion is as certain as any in physics and in ethics. This footprint alone, then, provides the observer with information about the teeth, the jawbone, the vertebrae, each leg bone, the thighs, shoulders and pelvis of the animal which had just passed: it is a more certain proof than all Zadig's tracks."

...and Conan Doyle would be inspired by Cuvier to write the following nonsense...

" As Cuvier could correctly describe a whole animal by the contemplation of a single bone, so the observer who has thoroughly understood one link in a series of incidents, should be able accurately to state all the other ones, both before and after."
http://www.sshf.com/encyclopedia/index.php/Cuvier

All of which inspired some jerk to make a cartoon about an absurd pink dinosaur aptly named Serendipity... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFVutz- ... 71&index=1

The dinosaur hoax is one of the strongest in imagination, despite its weakest of evidences.

What can we learn from an "island hoax" that floats disconnected from the others, as the dinosaur hoax does? It is not connected much to political ways of thinking except as politics is always connected to the big questions. Alone, the dinosaur myth is connected to nothing less than the very biggest questions of our time, immediately.

Earth science. Biology. Where we come from. Where we are going.

At most, its political connection is to oil. And hasn't the dinosaur myth expanded to fit our increased use of petroleum? Psychologically speaking, the metaphysical dinosaur is just a metaphorical dinosaur from an era when we needed to fear technology in that particular way. What is the modern "dinosaur"? It is the "atom" or more specifically the component parts of the "primordial"!

I think the imagination of the Predatory Ruling Class (not to mention our own active imaginations) has cautiously altered "dragon" and "beast" myths over time to create the "giant lizard" story, and finally the "terrible ancestors of birds" story to always match the most present scientific thinking of monsters. Over thousands of years, a chimera — from an Anglo fear or distrust of reptiles — has become the clay and metal creations of sculptors. (Not to mention the subject of new age conspiracy beliefs). It was evolved into a wariness about oil, because that was the most terrifying technology at one point. Arms and legs getting ripped off in overcrowded, unsafe factories of the industrial revolution.

That dinosaurs are sometimes seen as potential "friends" (if mostly by children who would naively befriend everything) may bode well for our collective imagination. Not so much for adults who still treat them as evidence of their concept of physical evolution. Why did we invent these monsters?

The Nuke Hoax may be a similar chimera, but one which is closer in relation to the "monsters" of Western thought: our violent nature, the risks of democracy, genocides old and new, and once again fear of technology.

Wizard spells, curses and evil machinations turning to magic missiles and now magic robots. The Nuke Hoax is an update to the Dinosaur Hoax in that it carries the theme of fear of technology. Now they are phasing out the monster of "dinosaurs" into harmless chickens and birds. Meanwhile, nuclear weapons are increasingly blamed. (The bizarre pseudo-threat of "cyber warfare" or "Anonymous" seems to be another one on the rise to specifically relate to computers.)

I suspect they're props meant to make you think that these are 'large scale' 'scientific tests'... there's nothing particularly difficult about launching smoke rockets however.

There is a claim of a barrage balloon at Trinity...
page 53 wrote: They had two stations: one on the ground at 550 m from the bomb and another one at the same distance but lifted by a balloon to an elevation such that the line joining the balloon with the bomb m-ade a 45° angle with the horizontal. The purpose of the latter station was to get away from the effects due to the earth thrown into the air by the explosion.
... and a photo of a balloon.

Image

When watching the better versions of Trinity the two puffs above the forming mushroom cloud I think are meant to be the vaporized balloons.

Image

I posted it awhile back but there's lots of rockets, smoke screens & other props in this video...

full link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEASKjAItHY

They tend to be a dead giveaway that there's something not at all right with this imagery though.

For instance observe the blast at 3:34 onwards... the smoke screens & trails seem oblivious to the gigantic explosion & its (presumably massive) shockwave.

U.S. Air Force 1352nd Photographic Group, Lookout Mountain Station - http://www.radiochemistry.org/history/n ... r_snapper/ has source info for that photo and attributes it to the US government

Nuclear explosion photographed by rapatronic camera less than 1 millisecond after detonation. The fireball is about 20 meters in diameter. The spikes at the bottom of the fireball are due to what is known as the rope trick effect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-speed ... tricks.jpg

Nuclear detonation from the "Tumbler Snapper" test series showing fireball and "rope tricks" by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory The photograph was shot by a Rapatronic camera built by EG&G. Since each camera could record only one exposure on a sheet of film, banks of four to 10 cameras were set up to take sequences of photographs. The average exposure time was three millionths of a second. The cameras were last used at the Test Site in 1962. A paragraph from Michael Light's book 100 suns provides insight to the origin of such photos follows here: "At the still picture branch of the United States National Archives at College Park, Maryland, head archivist Kate Flaherty was unfailingly helpful during all aspects of research at that great institution, as were her staff members Theresa Roy and Sharon Culley. Roger Meade, chief archivist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, went above the call of duty to make material available and help identify some of its more arcane aspects. At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, archivists Steve Wofford, Beverly Bull and Maxine Trost helped with image research. Nick Broderick, classification analyst at Lawrence Livermore, kindly provided final identification of notoriously difficult to attribute ultra-high-speed Rapatronic images made by E.G.&G. Thanks as well to filmmaker Peter Kuran for additional identification help with Rapatronic images."

An 'Alex Wellerstein' update.

Alex shows that he isn't immune to a bit of Numerology when he celebrates an important 'anniversary' of the 1968 Thule H-bomb crash. As per usual he pushes the most god awful imagery*.

47 years ago today (1/21/68): a B-52 loaded with four H-bombs crashed near Thule, Greenland. The crash site

Image

Further imagery of the crash can be found here & here.

Only the engines & one wheel survived the crash... the rest of the plane "sank beneath the melting ice".

Image

Image

The guy in charge of the clean up operation & the recovery of the "four 1.1MT H bombs" (total yield 44MT) quickly retired & then died in a plane crash.

A man called William H. Chambers who worked as a Nuke bomb designer for 57 years (& perhaps is the guy who helped write a paper on X-ray flare measurements from the 'Nuke bomb detecting' Vela-5 spacecraft) & led the NEST team told the BBC that one of the Nukes is still missing.

Alex, of course, swallows all this without question... I suspect he may not be best pleased to hear he's an honorary member of Cluesforum...
I’m a firm believer in the idea that sometimes non-academic historians stumble onto interesting things and interesting questions (John Coster-Mullen is a great example of this), and I don’t discriminate unless people show themselves to be going down truly untenable paths (like that small segment of the Internet who believes that all nuclear weapons are a hoax, which is just a truly silly “theory”
You see Alex prides himself on his 'rationality'...
But nuclear weapons are not French fries. When writing about them, it is extremely easy to fall into either an exaggerated alarmism or a naïve acceptance of reassuring official accounts. In my own work, I’m always trying to sort out the truth of the matter, which is usually somewhere in between these two extremes.
... so basically a naive alarmism/exaggerated acceptance then?

* Seriously he even pushes Hardtack imagery...

Now one of the many indirect evidences of Nuclear weapons are the reports of seismic detections... thousands of tests recorded diligently by seismic stations across the world. Surely these can not be all fake?

Well perhaps we can learn more about how this illusion was performed if we take a closer look at one of the more absurd claims.

Seismic signals from the edge of space

Now Operation Teak is pretty absurd in its own right; a 3.8MT H-bomb being detonated at 77km altitude. Most of the contemporary claims around this test revolve around news stories in Honolulu* of the alleged EMP effects & the supposed amazing visuals.

Image

Now what few mention nowadays, & will perhaps be most surprised to hear about, is that these tests not only are alleged to have generated such amazing visual & electrical phenomena but also seismic signals that reached New York!

Image

If you read the last paragraph you'll realize what happened here... the seismic data was 'released' by the Atomic Energy Commission for the 'study' of scientists. The absurd data, obviously, didn't raise a single suspicion.

Never would of course... "they wouldn't lie about a thing like that".

So remember Cluesforum 'according to Scientists' this 0.1 PSI blast wave (which is actually suspiciously large for reasons mentioned previously) generated seismic signals 9300km away!

Image

* Indeed even the official report on Hardtack discusses these front page news stories (pg 266)

Now that I realize that it has been alleged by 'Nuclear bomb scientists' that a 0.1 PSI blast wave will cause an earthquake I have to recalibrate my criticisms of the RDS-37 imagery.

I struggled to find a 'Nuke blast calculator' which will go as low as 0.1 PSI (Alex's only goes as low as 1.0) but I manged to find this one... and sure enough a 0.1 PSI blast would reach Kurchatov if you could detonate 1.6MT at the RDS-37 test site.

Of course you really would not expect a 0.1 PSI blast to collapse bomb shelters & kill little girls but then you wouldn't expect them to cause earthquakes either so who the hell really knows what's going on?

So long story short I won't be using Alex's 2d nuke blast tool again... however he does have a 3d Nuke blast tool.

Using that tool to recreate the 22/11/55 test imagery still proved tricky... for a number of reasons.

(i) There's no Google maps street view for Kurchatov
(ii) All of the main streets in Kurchatov head directly towards the test site meaning I cannot get the 'off to one side of the screen' effect.
(iii) He doesn't have an altitude setting for his 3D version.

But even so it's clear we have problems here...

First 44 seconds of RDS-37 as seen from Kurchatov

Image

First 44 seconds of a 1.6MT blast as seen from Kurchatov using Alex's 3d tool...

Image

Alex's nuke animation should be 1 degree higher off the ground to account for the air burst altitude but it's clear the Russian imagery is too large & too high.

Using this combination we can see the creators of these movies obviously got 'too cute' a number of times. So for instance...

First 30 seconds of Licorne as seen from the nearest Atoll

Image

First 30 seconds as seen from the nearest Atoll using Alex's 3d tool...

Image

... looks like I'm not the only one who might need to 'recalibrate'.

As has been mentioned previously the 21-22kt 'Trinity' test of 1945 is alleged to have produced a huge crater of radioactive glass. The imagery is less than impressive & the forensic evidence of the estimated "7500 tonnes" of Trinitite has been 'buried'... never to be seen again.

However Trinity is not the only alleged Surface Nuclear test... perhaps this potentially very convincing evidence can be found elsewhere?

I went through the Nuclear Test database & found all the above surface tests with stated crater sizes. Unfortunately there was no crater data on the Soviet, French & Chinese tests so I had to use Wiki for those nations & manually find the one's which should have produced sizable craters.

This is the list.

Image

All those tests should also have resulted in large craters of radioactive glass... they have a combined yield of over 52,588KT or almost 53MT.

Perhaps someone else will have better luck finding evidence of these amazing glass fields because I can't.

Without such evidence then we have a bit of a 'continuity error'.

Do real historical events have continuity errors?

I generally avoid analyzing the 'new & improved' HD versions of our 'atomic past' however this one I thought I'd post as it really makes no sense at all.

full link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5PCzB8aZoc

The 'Atom Bomb' Priscilla (allegedly a 1957 37kt test)... we have an explosion (with weird negative film effects) at 0:18.

Image

We then have the camera & foreground enveloped in smoke & dust at 0:26 onwards from some unknown & unknowable source.

Image

Finally, at 0:44, the actual blast wave hits.

Image

Perhaps it was an attempt at actually recreating true physics (i.e. having the shock wave travel faster through the ground than through the air... something which was often forgotten about in these movies) however here it just does not work.

A rather poor effort.

Notice when watching this old newsreel of an atomic test how you basically have a series of 'scenes'....

full link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38QS11V8caw

... each scene when analyzed individually is not very convincing at all ( a 'crowd flash' scene, a 'close up of smoke' scene, a 'distant three-part Mushroom cloud' scene, a 'fireball' scene etc).

Yet when 'viewed' together you have something which would be more than adequate to fool the majority of 1950's audiences.

I would suggest the neutral researcher ask themselves... does each scene look convincing, in its own right, to them? Using 21st century eyes?

Based on such imagery would you support the theft of trillions of Dollars, Rubles, Pounds, Francs, Euros & Yuan from the pockets of this planets civilians?
