Re: Hurricane Sandy
A lot of the storm photos are photoshopped or are from previous storms from a few years ago. Take it from someone who lives and is familiar with parts of the New Jersey coastline.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
In the Boston area we had some very impressive winds, downed tree limbs and the loss of power for nearly 24 hours. This was far from the purported areas of significant damage but it was still quite a powerful storm.

Are you sure that the blackouts were due to the storms?MrSinclair wrote:In the Boston area we had..the loss of power for nearly 24 hours.
It's just that today's grid is controlled remotely by a sophisticated and largely automated SCADA System (industrial control system).
The security of that system was implicated during the last mysterious splurge of outages.
At the time, 70% of the SCADA equipment was built and maintained by one corporation (Hathaway)

Re: Hurricane Sandy
No, I have no way of knowing what caused the power loss. For all I know it was determined in advance by algorithm where power outages would occur and for how long. Nonetheless the storm was downing tree limbs and power lines, I saw these things with my own eyes while out walking in it so it certainly is possible that it was the cause.
Still it seems the exception and not the rule when anything in the mainstream media is as reported. Nothing much would surprise me anymore...

Re: Hurricane Sandy
We're only talking a few downed tree limbs in a storm, all quite ordinary given the conditions. Not sure what can be read into that but thanks for bestowing the blessings.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
From the memoryhole...
Remember that splurge of blackouts in Aug/Sept 2003? Officially chalked up as due to the "cascade effect"..
Here's the timeline. Note the pattern. August and September both had blackouts on the 23rd and the 28th of each month. What's the natural likelihood of that???
But to me, this pattern is alarming in terms of the sudden increases in August and Sept of 2003. And notice the symmetry - both have 4 and 5 blackouts, not very bizarre or chaotic, almost evenly divided by month, not just 1 or 2 in one month and then 6 or 7 in the next, or 5 in one week, or any on the same day.
Take a look and have a say! There's something bizarre going on.. a 'crumbling grid', really?
How and why did the grid stop 'crumbling' at the end of September 2003?
------------------------------
August 6, 2003 - Buenos Aires was hit by a sudden blackout
August 14, 2003 - United States and Canada, 50 million affected.
August 18, 2003 - Republic of Georgia, 4.5 million affected.
August 23, 2003 - Finland's capital Helsinki and suburbs, over half million affected.
August 28, 2003 - London and southeast England.
-------
September 1, 2003 - Kuala Lumpur (capital city) and five other Malaysian states.
September 2, 2003 - Cancun, Mexico, Six hour blackout, affected 3 million (1 week before WTO Meeting).
September 23, 2003 - eastern Denmark and southern Sweden, 4 million affected.
September 28, 2003 - Italy and Geneva, Switzerland, 57 million affected.

"The standard current British pronunciation for "wrath" (as in "Wrath of Super-Storm Sandy") is [roth], but well educated people say [rawth]. While the US pronunciation is [rath], to rhyme with Kath."

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Here's ITV, the main commercial TV network in Britain, with its offering on the "crane collapse".
Again, the footage falls some way short on credibility.
Is it likely that :

Is it likely that :
- Hurricane SuperStorm Sandy would buckle the metal so severely?
- Would the jib arm swing down like that, and yet without snapping?

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Re crane - the wind load apparently overloaded the steel stays in the bending mode, i.e. the highest stressed element of the stay yielded, plastic hinges developed in the stay that failed and the crane fell. Then evidently the wind load didn't act on the crane any longer - only the gravity load - the latter being small and not enough the rip the stay apart = the crane hangs in the failed stays. Should be easy to repair.

I have found the media's reports of where the storm hit and how severe to vary wildly.fast67vellen2o wrote:A lot of the storm photos are photoshopped or are from previous storms from a few years ago. Take it from someone who lives and is familiar with parts of the New Jersey coastline.
One end of a boardwalk 'devastated' and a few yards down, in front of revamped property and
casinos virtually unscathed.
One town to the next Point Pleasant supposedly half buried in sand, while Cape May looks remarkably pristine. Both on the same side facing the Atlantic.
What do posters think of this CG flyover?

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Here is an article claiming reports of flooding at the NYSE were false.
http://www.businessinsider.com/the-new- ... ed-2012-10
Here is another that debunks reports of flooding at a subway station
http://fukushima-diary.com/2012/10/wher ... orm-sandy/
It was a powerful storm as far as wind but the amounts of rain were apparently much less than initially predicted.
