Mass Fabrication of Local News?

Unread post by RogerSmith »

First please note this is just my own theory and questioning, there is certainly nothing definite about this yet - at least as far as I know. I'm hoping others might have more thoughts, potential evidence, or contributions to this idea.

I often search through news aggregates, like Google News, for general terms like "accident", "police", and "oil", just to name a few. Over time, I've noticed it appears local news agencies for different cities would report different incidents unique to their city - however, these incidents are actually not very unique at all. In other words, two creepily similar occurrences would take place at two separate places at suspiciously similar times.

That's not entirely unrealistic, but when it recurs, and with certain incidents, it seems simply downright unfeasible.

A recent example of such would be a recent string of abduction and long-term hostage incidents, usually locked in the basement ordeals, one of which was even found questionable by other members on this forum.

Seven different events, I'm sure there's probably more if anyone wants to go looking for them. Four of them occur in July alone...

I'm sure this sort of cross-comparison can be used to show some stories false, but more than that, I've been wondering if there is some sort of nation-wide conditioning or the likes going on through the release of similar fabricated tales across different local papers at coordinated times. After all, there isn't any diversity in the parent companies of these local press.
