Wow! They charge that much? Holy Crap! I knew it was a lot but not that much.simonshack wrote:Thanks to everyone for being kind to me...
Now, let me say something: I believe that those calling me a shill are much better off people than myself (I have not - for the last 5 years - made any sort of living out if this research. In fact, some friends/girlfriends have been asking me what the heck keeps me going - doing this for free!...) Now, I suppose this thread will be read by both naysayers - and supporters alike. Thus, I will take this fine opportunity to ask everyone to chip in a few quid/euro/bucks to help me keep afloat. (Today, I just received a request for renewal of the September Clues.info website for its yearly hosting fee - about $300). I have many other bills to deal with - I hope you'll help me cover this one. Thanks!

I dearly hope this won't start a new thread titled: "Is Simon in it for the money?"
... aka the Ad Hominem logical fallacy. When you can't defeat an argument on its substance, attack the person!messdup wrote:I recently saw some crap on YouTube about Simon being a shill ...etc...and presenting no evidence to discredit SC.
It still amazes me that some people will resort to 'Character Assasination' to prove their point.
Ad hominem
An ad hominem (Latin for "to the man" or "to the person"), short for argumentum ad hominem, is an attempt to negate the truth of a claim by pointing out a negative characteristic or belief of the person supporting it.[1] Ad hominem reasoning is normally described as a logical fallacy,[2][3][4] more precisely an informal fallacy and an irrelevance.[5]
Abusive ad hominem (also called personal abuse or personal attacks) usually involves insulting or belittling one's opponent in order to attack his claim or invalidate his argument, but can also involve pointing out true character flaws or actions that are irrelevant to the opponent's argument. This is logically fallacious because it relates to the opponent's personal character, which has nothing to do with the logical merit of the opponent's argument, whereas mere verbal abuse in the absence of an argument is not ad hominem nor any kind of logical fallacy.[6]
Examples:
"You can't believe John when he says the proposed policy would help the economy. He doesn't even have a job."
"Candidate Jane's proposal about zoning is ridiculous. She was caught cheating on her taxes in 2003."
"What would Mary know about fixing cars? She is a woman." (an example of Ad feminam)
"What makes you so smart and all-knowing to deny God's existence? You haven't even finished school."
"Your exposition is highly correct and valid, but you don't have enough academic degree" (Credential fallacy, official degree fallacy). [7]
An abusive ad hominem can apply to a judgment of cultural works or academic efforts based on the behavior or unconventional political beliefs of an artist, author, or musician, or the taste of an infamous person who loved a certain work.
Examples:
Jimi Hendrix died of a drug overdose, so his music was worthless.[citation needed]
Leni Riefenstahl was a Nazi, so her film The Triumph of the Will is devoid of merit.[citation needed]
