Fakery in Orbit: THE I$$

If NASA faked the moon landings, does the agency have any credibility at all? Was the Space Shuttle program also a hoax? Is the International Space Station another one? Do not dismiss these hypotheses offhand. Check out our wider NASA research and make up your own mind about it all.

I am very impressed by this SpaceX Dragon space ship that is just now allegedly visiting the ISS: From the presskit

we learn how the Dragon arrived at the ISS:

Forty seconds after second-stage ignition, Dragon’s protective nose cone, which covers Dragon’s berthing mechanism, will be jettisoned. At the nine minute, 14 second mark after launch, the second-stage engine cuts off (SECO). Thirty-five seconds later, Dragon separates from Falcon 9’s second stage and seconds later, Dragon will reach its preliminary orbit. It then deploys its solar arrays, and begins a carefully choreographed series of Draco thruster firings to reach the space station.

You really wonder how the Dragon got rid of Falcon 9’s second stage, when it had reached the preliminary orbit very close to the ISS. It seems the second stage has same velocity and altitude as the Dragon! It must still be up there … orbiting Earth.

Question is however how Dragon gets back to Earth. It looks very simple according to the press kit:

Image

You just disconnect from the ISS and then depart by dropping down on Earth. In the last moment parachutes are deployed. Before that Dragon brakes using friction for about 30 minutes! Then it splashes into the Pacific 450 km off southern California!

Dragon brake equipment: heat shield friction braking

Dragon has the most effective heat shield in the world. Designed with NASA and fabricated by SpaceX, it is made of PICA-X, a high-performance variant on NASA’s original phenolic impregnated carbon ablator (PICA). PICA-X is designed to withstand heat rates from a lunar return mission, which far exceed the requirements for a low-Earth orbit mission.

Primary heat shield: Tiled phenolic impregnated carbon ablator (PICA-X), fabricated in-house.
Backshell: SpaceX Proprietary Ablative Material (SPAM).
Dragon’s passively stable shape generates lift, as it reenters the Earth’s atmosphere. Its 18 Draco thrusters provide roll control during reentry to keep it precisely on course toward the landing site before its parachutes deploy.

Dragon reentry

Approximately six hours after Dragon leaves the station, it will conduct its deorbit burn, which lasts up to 10 minutes. It takes about 30 minutes for Dragon to reenter the Earth’s atmosphere, allowing it to splash down in the Pacific Ocean, about 450 kilometers (250 miles) off the coast of southern California.

Dragon Recovery

Dragon’s landing is controlled by automatic firing of its Draco thrusters during reentry.
In a carefully timed sequence of events, dual drogue parachutes deploy at 13,700 meters (45,000 feet) to stabilize and slow the spacecraft. Full deployment of the drogues triggers the release of the three main parachutes, each 35 meters (116 feet) in diameter, at about 3,000 meters (10,000 feet). While the drogues detach from the spacecraft, these main parachutes further slow the spacecraft's descent to approximately 4.8 to 5.4 meters per second (16 to 18 feet).
Even if Dragon were to lose one of its main parachutes, the two remaining chutes would still permit a safe landing.

SpaceX will use a 100-foot boat equipped with an A-frame and an articulating crane, a 90-foot crew boat for telemetry operations, and two 24-foot rigid-hull inflatable boats to perform recovery operations. On board will be approximately a dozen SpaceX engineers and technicians as well as a four-person dive team.
Once Dragon splashes down, the team will first secure the vehicle and then place it on deck for the journey back to shore.

450 kilometers off the coast of southern California. A little armada of a 100 foot boat to lift the Dragon out of the sea, a 90 foot crew boat and two rubber boats. Imagine if the Dragon doesn't splash down but lands in the Nevada desert!

Just noticed that in the comments for this YouTube video purporting to show the ISS viewed from Earth a person with the screen name of messierhunter posted 2 comments 1 week ago as follows:
Yeah, unfortunately the psychos seem to have latched onto your video. They even discussed it over on their little nutjob forum. I'm amazed how many of them are over there posting completely believing that you and I and anyone else who has this kind of footage of ISS are part of some massive conspiracy.
and
There are some very psychotic people out there who think ISS is a hoax and all footage of it must be fake. They have their own little forum out there and they've been discussing one of my videos lately as well and tried to do all kinds of creepy digging into my background to "expose the hoax." One of them even confronted an astronaut with his nonsense. Watch yourself.
I can't imagine who that could be.

Great observation, Reichstag. And his pants appear to take on the same texture of the ground in spots. And is this the most satisfying picture of himself...shadowed next to a silver car?

And THIS was the twerpy little baby living in his mother's basement who had the misguided gall to threaten US with defamation? Maybe we should sue him for impersonating a real live adult human being, wrongly covering up the real little bittie boy he actually is, by acting out on our forum. Asswipe.

His mother should just spank him and send back down to the basement with no dinner, where he can play with his beloved equipment - and himself.

Mark Messier was a hockey Hall-Of-Famer, playing with Gretzky in Edmonton's finest years. Maybe Mark M. should also sue astronutfool for defamation, forcing him to stop using messierhunter as a nom de guerre.

Here's a good example of layering gone wrong in one of the ISS shots. It's evident throughout the whole production, but especially noticable after approx. 10:50 on. Watch how Kelly's pants appear to be constantly trying to render like graphics do sometimes when the resources of the computer are taxed.

full link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPoE8icyE7c

Edit: Added 11/3. What force allows Kelly to drop back down to resume his exercise? He demonstrates that it is a 'Zero-G' environment when he rolls over to check his computer. :)

No, FredB : the so-called "messier hunters" are named after French astronomer Charles Messier (26 June 1730 – 12 April 1817).

Thank you for the clarification, Simon. Why would any 'real adult' waste his time doing Messier Hunting? It seems absurd.

I enjoyed "the Sky at Night" before I stopped watching TV, Patrick Whatshisname was very fond of Messier Objects!

Very messy!

Sir Patrick has his own memory problems. Moore, a confirmed bachelor, can't remember the name of his fiancee who was apparently blown to bits by a NAZI bomb in WWII.
Altough he vividly remembers it was the NAZI Kraut Scum wot dunnit!

"The only good Kraut is a dead Kraut!": the epitaph of Sir Patrick Moore CBE, FRS, FRAS

Snort! Snort! Chortle! Chortle! Spiffing!
"The only romantic interest in Moore's life, a nurse named Flora, was killed during an air raid when a bomb struck her ambulance - an event which seems to have permanently affected his view of Germany. "We must take care," he continues in the interview. "There may be another war. The Germans will try again, given another chance. A Kraut is a Kraut is a Kraut. And the only good Kraut is a dead Kraut."
" The 89-year-old has warned there “may be another war” and added “the only good Kraut is a dead Kraut” as he disclosed his thoughts on Europe, Sky at Night and his late love...“We must take care,” he told the Radio Times. “There may be another war. The Germans will try again, given another chance. A Kraut is a Kraut is a Kraut. The Germans tried to conquer us. The French betrayed us. The Belgians did very little and the Italians made us our ice cream." His strong feelings could be the result of the death of his late fiancé Lorna, who was killed by a falling bomb when the couple were just 20."
